EU budget cuts a „catastrophic signal for our democracy“

Niklas Nienaß MEP, in charge of the EU programmes „Creative Europe“ and „European Solidarity Corps“ for the Green/EFA group, criticises the EU Council’s proposal for the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF):

„The Council’s proposal is a farce. The planned cuts in the EU budget will hit the culture and education sector particularly hard. EU programmes such as ‚Creative Europe‘ or the ‚European Solidarity Corps‘ bring people in Europe together. They are the figureheads of European cultural and educational policy. Cutting their budgets is irresponsible and, in times of increasing nationalism, a catastrophic signal for our democracy. After all, more money for culture and education also means more action against populism! I therefore urge the member states to reject the Council’s proposal and to strive for a larger EU budget. Culture and education are the backbone of our society and require adequate funding.“
